Often the speakers are specialist amateur growers who pass on some of their expertise. Sometimes the speakers are from nurseries and they bring plants for sale. At other times\, the speakers may be concerned with orchids in the wild. \nDisplay tables are an important part of our meetings and members are encouraged to bring any flowering plants they have for others to appreciate. To kick off the year\, the Society hosts its annual winter auction where members can buy rare and unusual orchids or sell their surplus plants. \nThis event is a wonderful chance for OSGB members to exchange plants or find a great deal. Recent auctions have featured orchids that are no longer available commercially\, so you may have an opportunity to acquire something special from your wish list. If you’re not yet a member\, you can find information on joining the Society here or just join on the day. \nDoors open at 1:30pm\, and anyone selling plants must register them before the auction begins at 2:00pm. Members are allowed to bring up to eight lots (or twelve for joint members)\, and can set a minimum bid or reserve price if desired. Please note that 10% of each sale goes to the Society. These are aimed at Trainee Judges to allow them to view as wide a selection of orchids as possible and to learn to judge plants for themselves. The training programme applies and teaches the rules in developing orchid judges to international accepted standards of accreditation. After a period of time and subject to achieving the overall pass mark\, a Trainee may be deemed to have become a qualified BOC Orchid Judge and is able to judge at events worldwide. After qualifying judges are encouraged to attend symposiums in order to maintain their skills levels.
